20080625 tom and kathy urbanski update

i have been following tom and kathy urbanski for almost a year and a half now, since tom was shot multiple times in a melee that broke out at minxx strip club on the weekend of the nba all star game here in vegas in february 2007.

a brief edit of my coverage is in the left hand navigation of this site, called “four bullets later,” and linked from the paper is a multimedia video piece by the same name that looks back one-year later at their journey since the shooting.

i have been along through much of tom and kathy’s ups and downs of the last 17 months, continuing to document their story. as such, friends, family and colleagues in other places have come to ask me how tom and kathy are doing in the course of regular conversations.

so a very brief update and look at the urbanskis from last week….

handicap accessible renovations have yet to begin on the urbanskis’ home. they continue to live out of a residence inn hotel room with their two pet turtles – going on a year now, since they came back to las vegas from craig hospital. they are ever frustrated, just wanting to return to their own home. another meeting with workers compensation was held monday, discussing why particular items/renovations are needed for his disability.

as a couple they are doing better with how they communicate, and each of them is improving with how they personally are coping with the turn their lives have forever taken. mostly though, they both say everything will be better when they can just go home.
