20090420 holy pulitzer!

we learned today that we won the pulitzer prize for public service for exposing a high death rate among construction workers on the las vegas strip.

according to the pulitzer web site, the honor was “awarded to the Las Vegas Sun, and notably the courageous reporting by Alexandra Berzon, for the exposure of the high death rate among construction workers on the Las Vegas Strip amid lax enforcement of regulations, leading to changes in policy and improved safety conditions.”

with a lost cell phone and attending an OSHA hearing, alexandra did not get the news until returning to the newsroom, which worked great for photos! there was champagne and remarks with the entire print and online staff and it’s off for post-work drinks now!

huge congrats again to ali and the entire staff….as well as damon winter of the new york times for winning the feature photography pulitzer, and patrick farrell of the miami herald for taking the breaking news photography prize.

this is reporter emily richmond, left, greeting alexandra as she is first told of the award. more of my photos and coverage from the day’s news are on www.lasvegassun.com. reuters has a nice “winning a pulitzer” slideshow from various paper’s celebrations today too.
