20090828 first day of school

pre-kindergarten can be scary! this little one had his face wedged into the gate and was sobbing for longer than i could stay. poor little guy…

20090827 washington post travel assignment

a few weeks ago i got a call from a photo editor at the washington post. she had a last minute travel assignment that needed to be turned in 48 hours. i made it happen and it ended up getting great play in that sunday’s edition. the assignment took me to three new restaurants i hadn’t known about, and one of them turned out to be a new favorite spot, raku! read food critic and post staffer tom sietsema’s article, “In Vegas, a Diner’s Jackpot.”

20090823 time-out, city...

kirk and his son, james, and i hopped town friday night for a last minute over-night in the mountains outside vegas to get some fresh air and wake up in the trees before busy saturday life chores came calling….

20090822 pinball hall of fame

one of vegas’ hidden treasures for all. and kristen peterson’s great story and more pictures of the player’s paradise are here.

20090623 unfortunate reality....

this is not a visual metaphor, darn it. we in print journalism persevere! (and also give you www.lasvegassun.com)

t.brown the blogger returns…

20090602 lake mead

truly one of the best parts of las vegas is the accessibility to all manner of outdoor fun, in every direction…this from lake mead over memorial day with my man and his boy. through the narrows on lake mead, current water level exposes the water lines of previous years….

20090601 obama and back again...

the president at nellis air force base last week speaking about the recovery act and renewable energy during “a quick trip to vegas”….

20090515 more contest news.....

we learned last week that the paper cleaned up at this year’s associated press california/nevada newswriting and photo contest.

the sun won the top two awards in a competition among all newspapers in the region. against newspapers in our circulation class — 75,000 to 200,000 — the sun also won first place in six of the seven newswriting categories as well as a first place for portrait photography for my picture of ivan jimenez barajas, 3, a fourth-generation circo atayde clown who performs as “papelito.”

the recognition reminded me how much i adored the time at the mexican circus last summer. here’s the blog post from last summer with more pictures.

and this is papelito:

20090513 hawaii puker redux....

scrolling through my phone i came across another memorable hawaii moment. 10pm at a bar in waikiki…..

friends don’t let friends puk alone. yes, the whole holding the hair thing really happens. and no, i do not know these women. but seriously, 10pm?!! if only i had had a real camera with me. drats.

20090506 rolling stone....

last month i hung out with the band fall out boy before their show at the pearl here in vegas. rolling stone contacted me to spend time with the guys for their “on the road” feature that goes backstage with different bands each month to get a glimpse of the musicians and their scene while on tour.

the magazine was only able to run a few pictures in print, so here are some out-takes from the day. be sure to pick up the issue on stands now (with kings of leon on the cover), and check out page 24 ;-)

20090428 u.s. bowling congress....

the united states bowling congress open championships is on….actually, it’s “on” for 154 days during which more than 14,000 teams will play more than 700,000 games between feb. 21 – july 23 “(unless extended).”

las vegas sun sports writer ron kantowski and i spent a day there last week for a mid-event feature. and for the first time EVER, in my experience, a writer cut their own story down, from 50 inches to 12(!!!!), so we could run more photos in the print edition. his full length story and more photos appear in the online publication. a moment to be remembered for sure. you rule, ron!

these are a few of my favorite frames from the day….

20090422 killing time....

make a wish and kiss the clock! i killed an extra 10 minutes at a business conference assignment this morning in order to wait for this one second.

does this mean my one wish will get lucky 21 times, or should i have made 21 wishes? i’m banking on the former.

ps….happy earth day!
